...a considerable part of "Hittite" literature is dependent on foreign models: Babilonian, Hurrian, and Canaanite. But it must be noted that this dependence isn't slavery. There are literal translations of some hymns and oratories . . . In other oratories Babilonian elements are used liberally or are transformed, and others still are completely free of them. Among the narrative texts: epocs and other stories . . . not one exists for which we have found a literal model.
