trends

though it was just a slight spectacle and a guilty tiptoeing past that i organized, i still found it necessary and decorous that only the two of us would drink Toothstejnn the Red from plastic cups and run through the canon of general remarks.  the colloquium speaker had a technique which i liked, of putting in a conclusion, then putting another slide that says wait a minute, but what if... then going on for 20 more minutes or so.  or stating a fact.  then another bulletpoint says wait never mind it's this.  then another wait nevermind it's this.  so on.

i am getting more knowledge about korea, its language its people and food than i bargained for.  korean, historically, has the latin stress rule but backwards.  wait nevermind it's... koreans do not suffer gladly coda consonants.  that much is sure.  if you want to ruin a korean linguistics conference, all you have to do is bring up stress, i hear.  duylinh and i tried another korean restaurant, since they seem the second toughest in the eatings.

"so this thing like with the seafood and it's bubbly, do you have that.  is this it?  like what is that?"
"coda pishy sea foody spicy."

it turned out to be excellent and i had something with squid.  i do not know the name of anything, but no matter what you eat, you have mandatory appetizers, like five of them.  we saw the ying quartet.  we were late, and the usher let us in at the end of the first movement, then duylinh's phone went off, "rape me" because that cost $0.35 to upload and hell no am i paying to change it.  everyone gasped and we were finally ejected when i had the temerity to unwrap a cough drop.

liquidae voces avium

or of stringed instruments.

i decided to give science fiction a chance.  i got dhalgren by samuel delany and an volume of some novels of philip k. dick.  i found that murakami adopted one idea from Flow my Tears, the Policeman Said in The Wind-up Bird Chronicle

to wit:

"You are, he thought, a prostitute of the mind.  And it's your mind that is prostituting itself, before and beyond anyone else's.  Although you yourself would never recognize it.  And, if you did, you'd say you were forced into it.  Yes; forced into it, but by whom?"
