I have concluded my study and found that my hypothesis is probably wrong.  But to be absolutely sure I'd have to do a much bigger study and i'd have to revise the surveys a bit.  I would have to make sure that the character sequences "ff," "fl," and "fi" were not omitted, because participants thought that the real test was in piecing together the words with their missing letters.  Not even close to being right.  But by reasoning it seemed manifest to me.  That is why it is important to always check things out.  Your mind has a device inside of it that causes you to be certain about things that you have no right to be certain about.
